Has anyone else heard about this. I remember watching the stage show a few years back and now they are making a movie. From what I've seen so far it'll be freakin awesome. For those of you who don't know, here's a quick background
Repo The Genetic Opera is well of course, an opera. In the vein of many opera/musicals getting a theatrical makeover, Repo is scheduled for a theatrical release in Nov. (Only in like 4 cities though, damnit).
Most will try and compare this with Sweeney Todd, and while the two do have similarities, well violence and singing at least, the differences are there too. For one, Sweeney Todd is a musical, which means they have songs as well as speaking parts. Repo is an opera, which means all parts are sung. Although for the theatrical version some parts have been ommited and in their place, an animated graphic novel tells the backstory. Secondly with Johnny Depp's portrayal of Sweeney Todd's brooding attitude and dark alure he tends to appeal to the modern emo kid. Repo on the other hand has a decidedly gothic undertone, especially Gravedigger who is my personal favorite.
The story behind Repo, The Genetic Opera, is that in the future, you can buy designer body parts. The company GeneCo has an easy payment plan. Only problem is, you don't pay, they send the repo man to take the part(s) back. Missed that payment on your new liver? The repo man will find you and rip it out on the spot!
I for one, can't wait to see this, although I'll prolly have to wait for the DVD, and feel that it'll grow to cult status along the likes of Rocky Horror Picture Show, and Nightmare Before Christmas.
